I have already said that many photographic films attribute magic properties. There are legends that if you shoot on a film, then the picture gets so coveted and mysterious "artistry". In my deep (and also voiced) belief, this is primarily due to the fact that the number of decent photos taken on film is very, very large. Now, I believe that the number of good photographers shooting on film is in percentage terms much higher than twenty years ago. The amateur photo almost completely took away the "figure".
At the same time, people continue to shoot the black-and-white film very willingly, almost more willingly than with color. This happens for quite specific reasons, but, again, for the layman, this leads to the identification of black and white photography and artistic. I hasten to disappoint all those who shoot for color digital equipment and then transfer their photos to the "BW", that they are much further from the black and white picture than they think.

So, let's start with a simple one. Many are sure that the black and white image is a picture where there are no colors. Many people are tempted to discolor the digital picture in order to get something black and white. But here there is one serious problem. Imagine a red poppy. His beauty in the picture is due to color information: we see a strong contrast between the flower and the stem. By discolouring the image, we get a gray stem and gray petals. Sadness and despondency.

This is the whole trick of black and white photography: the contrast can only be light, but not color. Therefore, to discolor a color photograph is necessary with the mind. Here the most savvy will think: "again he is clever, still know about Black & White in Photoshop, I even remember the key combination, alt-shift-command-be." But neither the alto, nor the shif, nor the command-ba will help us.

You can get a black-and-white shot by taking it in black and white. There are black and white digital cameras, about film and so it is clear. The principal difference in both cases is that additional filters are used in color analogs. Color film is a sandwich, where light-sensitive particles are laid with color filters. Each pixel in the color matrix is covered by a blue, red or green filter. In general, this means that in color photography, each color receives its own volume of light, which can not but affect the result. In the film, certain colors are simply better (everything is chosen so that these colors are better for people), in the figure, as it was said, the camera somehow averages the color values, which can lead to unwanted artifacts.

Black-and-white sensing elements perceive only light. This means that completely the whole world is working on getting the same picture, not being sprayed into separate colors. Two-thirds of the pixels or particles of the color film will not work if you shoot a green meadow or a blue sea; black and white elements will perceive all-all light. The person very well distinguishes changes in light, with the color of the matter somewhat worse. That is, black and white elements perfectly preserve the most valuable information for the human eye, sacrificing less valuable; colored donate important information, but add color. In practice, this means that we perceive black and white images very detailed, sharp, contrast - their dignity is enhanced by subjective perception. I think that this makes black and white pictures "artistic"; that's why black and white photography does not even think of disappearing.

How to make a black and white shot of a color? No, of course. A snapshot at the camera or film level was "littered" with color information, nothing to return. So, if you really deal with black and white photography, you need to shoot on black and white technique. In general, I would like to see more black and white digital technology. So far, the choice is reduced to a pretty stupid Lake for a non-recurring eight thousand dollars. I once saw the material from the movie camera Red Epic Dragon Monochrome in 4K format. The picture was so sharp that it was scary to cut it. That was incredible.

A real black and white shooting requires a hint of eye and attention. It is necessary to understand what will give the notorious contrast in the frame, because the objects of adjacent tone, but of different colors, will give the same gray color. The color contrast is converted into light by means of color filters, and one should think that one color will become darker from this, and the other will be lighter. The whole story, in short, a real brain explosion. But the result will be a head taller than those who will discolor a picture in Photoshop.
